Understand that #change is a part of life and work. Embrace it with an open mind, knowing that it can lead to #growth and new opportunities.

"Change is the act of any environment or something becoming different. Most often we have heard the phrase 'change is good,' but in many cases where there can a mental disassociation associated to change. It usually comes with angst, difficulty acting and/or anxiety. Unfortunately, change is inevitable." - Alicia E. Mckoy.

So let's be gentle with our team when we face workplace changes. Here are some steps we recommend:

DEFINITIONS & INTRODUCTION

Change is the act of any environment or thing becoming different. Most often we’ve heard the phrase “change is good”, but in many cases where there is a mental disassociation to change.  It usually comes with angst, difficulty acting and/or anxiety.  Unfortunately, change is inevitable.  As our workplaces grow or shrink, change management can be necessary.  The best way to work through it is to work as a team and guide employees along the journey with grace and acknowledgment that the change process can be a hard one.

And sometimes it comes from the environment around us changing.  Market shifts, layoffs, expansion, and growth.  What is the importance of expanding and growing your company culture?  For one, to move us all forward, collectively, and together.  To fix, change, solve, grow, and empower each other.

As an employee or someone in the organization who might not have the full ability to change the culture, what can you do around disengagement while you wait to see the overall culture change?  Start by asking leadership. Ask to meet with your manager and find out what you can do to connect and engage more, or to work towards solving current challenges. Let the answers they give guide the next step.

Change can be hard.  But we can help create safer spaces for change. Thus, having a better chance at meeting your expectations. If there are going to be layoffs or if there are going to be changes in organization, it’s best to share ahead of time.  Let them think things are coming.  It’s okay to say that you may not have all the information, but the more you can start to share early with help!  Also consider that some people are still carrying the trauma from the pandemic.  And that will look different from person to person.

Luckily, at some point, we will get to a point where we look back and the change we worked through represents new growth that we've built into our lives. So that the angst that we once had, from the insurmountable challenges  that we face in life is no longer as steep, and we've come to a place of peace. And then every challenge is so much easier at that point.

These following actions steps will provide a pathway to thrive in the midst of change.

COPING & ACTION STEPS YOU CAN TAKE TODAY!

1.      ASK. Yourself what has changed?

2.     BREATHE. Slowly, in through the nose out through the mouth.

3.     THINK. Change is a consistent part of life. Change is advancement & forward movement.

4.     AFFIRM. “I am capable, I am motivated, I like what I do.” And help others motivate themselves as well.

5.     PROCESS. What does change mean? It means, “Opportunity to modify and tweak.”
